B1 · Lezione 28 · so e such con that
La spiegazione completa, dalla lezione che insegna questa regola
Questa struttura c'è anche in italiano: Ero così agitato che mi tremavano le mani. Una prima parte dice quanto era forte la sensazione, poi dopo che viene la conseguenza. In inglese la seconda parte comincia con that: I was so nervous that my hands were shaking.
La differenza è che dove l'italiano usa quasi sempre così (oppure tanto, talmente, tale), l'inglese ha due parole, so e such, e sceglie in base alla parola che viene dopo. In tutta la lezione si tratta di imparare questa scelta.
so + aggettivo o avverbio
so è il così che va davanti a un aggettivo o a un avverbio quando dopo non c'è un nome: so sad (così triste), so quietly (così piano).
- The film was so sad that everyone cried. (so + aggettivo)
- He spoke so quietly that nobody heard him. (so + avverbio)
such + gruppo nominale
Quando dopo c'è un nome, anche con un aggettivo in mezzo, si usa such. L'italiano qui usa ancora così (una giornata così bella, un così bel giorno) oppure un tale. L'inglese invece non mette mai so davanti a un nome. Fai attenzione all'articolo: in italiano diciamo un tale shock, con l'articolo prima, mentre in inglese l'articolo va dopo such: such a, such an. Con un nome plurale o non numerabile l'articolo non c'è.
- It was such a shock that I couldn't speak. (such a + nome singolare)
- She is such an honest person that everyone trusts her. (such an + aggettivo + nome)
- They were such kind neighbours that we missed them for years. (such + nome plurale)
so much e so many
Tanto/tanta/tanti/tante diventano so much con i nomi non numerabili e so many con i plurali: è la stessa distinzione di how much / how many. Da solo, dopo un verbo, si usa so much: ridere così tanto è laugh so much.
- I had so much work that I forgot to eat. (non numerabile)
- There were so many people that we couldn't get in. (plurale)
- She laughed so much that her face hurt. (dopo un verbo)
| Struttura | Cosa segue | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| so + adjective + that | un aggettivo, senza nome | so angry that |
| so + adverb + that | un avverbio | so loudly that |
| such a/an + (adjective) + noun + that | un nome numerabile singolare | such a surprise that |
| such + (adjective) + plural noun + that | un nome plurale (o non numerabile) | such lovely people that |
| so much / so many + noun + that | una quantità | so many messages that |
La frase con that: la conseguenza
Dopo that c'è una frase completa, con il suo soggetto espresso: that I couldn't speak. Il soggetto non si può sottintendere come in italiano (che non riuscivo a parlare). A differenza del che italiano, poi, that si può omettere, e nel parlato capita spesso: I was so tired I fell asleep on the bus. Sono corrette tutte e due le forme.
Come in italiano, so e such si usano anche senza conseguenza, solo per rafforzare: I'm so happy for you! It was such a lovely day. (Che bella giornata!)
Quando in italiano viene così davanti a un nome, in inglese ci vuole such. Guarda la parola subito dopo lo spazio vuoto. Se è un nome, a/an o un aggettivo seguito da un nome, usa such: such a mess, such good news. Se il nome non c'è, usa so: so messy, so good. Such good senza nome è sbagliato (It was such good è sbagliato, It was so good è giusto) e so a non esiste.
I nomi che in italiano sono plurali ma in inglese non lo sono. News, advice, information e work sono non numerabili, quindi niente a: such good news, mai such a good news, e so much information. Per people vale il contrario: in italiano gente è singolare (tanta gente), ma in inglese è plurale, quindi si dice so many people.
Non è il so del livello A2. In I was tired, so I went to bed, so vuol dire quindi e unisce due frasi. In I was so tired that I went to bed, so è il così davanti a tired. La conseguenza viene dopo that, non dopo so.
