Frasi di scopo
In breve
| Chi fa la seconda azione? | Usa | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| lo stesso soggetto | to / in order to + forma base | I use it to edit videos. |
| un altro soggetto, presente | so that + soggetto + can / will | ...so that you can download it. |
| un altro soggetto, passato | so that + soggetto + could / would | ...so that it would be ready. |
| evitare qualcosa | so that ... won't / wouldn't / can't / couldn't; in order not to | ...so that I wouldn't forget it. |
«Per» + verbo non è mai for: niente for to, niente so that to. Lo scopo è so that, mentre so da solo indica la conseguenza.
B1 · Lezione 27 · Parlare dello scopo: so that e in order to
Per dire perché fai qualcosa conosci già to + forma base: I bought a power bank to charge my phone.
Stesso soggetto: to o in order to
- I use headphones to block out the noise on the train.
- You have to touch the sensor in order to unlock the device.
- In order to save power, I turn down the brightness.
Soggetto diverso: so that + modale
Dopo so that ci vuole una frase completa con il suo soggetto, e il verbo è quasi sempre un modale. Dove l'italiano metterebbe il congiuntivo, l'inglese mette can / will oppure could / would.
| Struttura | Verbo principale | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| so that ... can | presente / istruzione | I'll send you the link so that you can download the file. |
| so that ... could | passato | Dad put labels on the cables so that he could find the right one. |
| so that ... will | presente / istruzione | Charge the drone tonight so that it will be ready. |
| so that ... would | passato | She charged the camera overnight so that it would be ready for the wedding. |
| to / in order to + forma base | stesso soggetto, qualsiasi tempo | I need a faster laptop to edit my videos. |
Uno scopo negativo: perché qualcosa NON succeda
Per dire che cosa vuoi evitare, rendi negativo il modale: so that ... won't / wouldn't / can't / couldn't. Con lo stesso soggetto puoi dire in order not to + forma base. Qui l'ordine è come in italiano: «per non perdere» → not va prima di to.
- I wrote down the password so that I wouldn't forget it.
- Put a case on your phone so that the screen won't break.
- Turn off your location so that apps can't track you.
- I save my work to the cloud in order not to lose it.
«Per» davanti a un verbo non è mai for. Non tradurre parola per parola: non si dice for scan, for to scan o so that to. Usa I bought a scanner to scan my photos. Se lo scopo ha un altro soggetto: I bought a scanner so that my parents can scan their documents. Chiediti sempre chi fa la seconda azione. Se è la stessa persona, usa to / in order to. Se è un'altra, usa so that + soggetto + modale.
L'italiano perché vuol dire sia «because» sia «so that», ma l'inglese le tiene separate. Se dici il motivo (perché + indicativo) usa because. Se dici lo scopo (perché + congiuntivo) usa so that. Non tradurre in modo che con in a way that: anche qui si usa so that.
so that (scopo) non è il semplice so (= quindi, conseguenza). I turned the music down so that the baby could sleep dice che cosa volevo. I turned the music down, so the baby slept dice che cosa è successo.
Nel parlato informale si toglie spesso that: Speak louder so everyone can hear you. In questa lezione teniamo so that, che non è mai sbagliato.
