Semi-modali per capacità e permesso
In breve
| capacità | permesso | |
|---|---|---|
| presente | can (am able to = formale) | am/is/are allowed to / can |
| passato | could (in generale, = potevo) / was/were able to (una volta, = sono riuscito) | was/were allowed to |
| present perfect | have/has been able to | have/has been allowed to |
| futuro | will be able to | will be allowed to |
| dopo un modale | might/should/must be able to | might/should be allowed to |
Cambia solo be; dopo to c'è la forma base. Negazione sul primo ausiliare: won't / weren't / haven't been. Mai will can, mai it is allowed to me: il soggetto è la persona.
B1 · Lezione 13 · be able to e be allowed to
La spiegazione completa, dalla lezione che insegna questa regola
In italiano potere ha tutti i tempi: posso, potevo, ho potuto, potrò, dovrei poter… L'inglese can invece ha due forme sole, can e could. Non ha l'infinito (to can), non ha il futuro (will can), non ha forme composte con have (have could) e non può stare dopo un altro modale (might can).
L'inglese riempie questi vuoti con due espressioni costruite su be: be able to per la capacità, come essere in grado di, e be allowed to per il permesso, come avere il permesso di. Cambia solo be: able to e allowed to restano fissi, e il verbo che segue è sempre la forma base.
Dove can non ha forma
| Tempo | Capacità | Permesso |
|---|---|---|
| presente | I can run ten kilometres. (am able to è possibile, ma suona formale) | You are allowed to use the pool. / You can use the pool. |
| passato | I could / was able to finish the race. | We were allowed to train on the main pitch. |
| present perfect | I've been able to run every day this month. | She's been allowed to join the team. |
| futuro | You'll be able to lift more next month. | You'll be allowed to play on Saturday. |
| dopo un altro modale | You might be able to win. | You should be allowed to rest. |
Le due colonne seguono lo stesso schema: se sai will be able to, sai già will be allowed to. Scegli in base al significato: able = ne ho la forza o la capacità; allowed = le regole me lo permettono.
Il presente: le due espressioni non si comportano allo stesso modo
- Per la capacità al presente usa semplicemente can: She can swim fast. She is able to swim fast è corretto, ma suona formale e un po' rigido nella lingua di tutti i giorni.
- Per il permesso al presente be allowed to è normalissimo e frequente, soprattutto per le regole: You aren't allowed to wear shoes on this mat. Are we allowed to use the showers?
allowed è un participio passato e be allowed to è un passivo, con la stessa struttura di is cleaned o are made. Attenzione al soggetto: l'italiano dice mi è permesso, non ci è permesso, con la persona come complemento; l'inglese mette la persona al posto del soggetto: I am allowed to, we aren't allowed to. Non dire mai it is allowed to me. Il tempo lo porta be: am/is/are allowed, was/were allowed, have been allowed, will be allowed.
Il passato: could o was able to?
È la stessa distinzione che fai tra potevo e sono riuscito. could corrisponde all'imperfetto e indica una capacità generale: When I was young, I could run fast. (da giovane correvo veloce). Per un singolo risultato ottenuto in un'occasione precisa, quello che in italiano è sono riuscito a o ho potuto, usa was/were able to: The ball was wet, but I was able to catch it. Quindi in una frase affermativa non rendere sono riuscito con could. Alla forma negativa vanno bene entrambi: I couldn't finish oppure we weren't able to finish. Per il permesso al passato usa was/were allowed to: We were allowed to leave early.
Negazione e domanda
Si fanno sul primo ausiliare, esattamente come nei tempi che conosci già: won't be able to, weren't able to, wasn't allowed to, haven't been able to. Nella domanda il primo ausiliare va prima del soggetto: Will you be able to come? Were you allowed to play? Have you been able to train? Are we allowed to…?
- I won't be able to play on Sunday. My knee hurts.
- It was too hot, and we weren't able to finish the game.
- Players aren't allowed to touch the ball with their hands.
- Have you been able to train this week?
- Were you allowed to stay after the match?
La trappola tipica per chi parla italiano è tradurre parola per parola: potrò non diventa will can, ho potuto non diventa have could, e dopo un altro modale non si mette might can. Al posto di can usa be able to o be allowed to: will be able to, have been able to, might be allowed to.
