ought to e had better

In breve

Forma Uso
ought to + forma base consiglio generale = should (dovresti)
ought not to + forma base formale = shouldn't
had better / 'd better + forma base avvertimento urgente: adesso, altrimenti guai (faresti meglio a)
had better not + forma base avvertimento a non fare

La negazione è had better not.

B1 · Lezione 14 · ought to e had better

Per dare un consiglio sai già usare should, il nostro dovresti: You should drink more water.

ought to: un altro «dovresti»

ought to + forma base ha lo stesso significato di should, solo un po' più formale e meno frequente: You ought to see a doctor = You should see a doctor = Dovresti andare dal medico. Come should, non cambia mai (he ought to, niente -s) e non ha un passato. A differenza di should, però, ha sempre il to: in una frase affermativa ought non sta mai da solo.

La forma negativa è ought not to (You ought not to smoke). Suona formale: nel parlato quasi tutti dicono semplicemente shouldn't.

had better: «faresti meglio a», subito

You'd better take an umbrella (altrimenti ti bagni). We'd better leave now (altrimenti perdiamo il treno). Nel parlato si contrae quasi sempre in 'd better: I'd better, you'd better, she'd better.

Nella forma negativa il not va dopo better: had better not + forma base. You'd better not eat that fish: ha un odore strano.

Consigli e avvertimenti
FormaStrutturaEsempio
ought toought to + base formYou ought to rest.
ought not toought not to + base formYou ought not to skip meals.
had betterhad better / 'd better + base formYou'd better call the doctor.
had better nothad better not / 'd better not + base formYou'd better not go to work.
should (compare)should + base formYou should rest more.

Qui l'italiano ti porta fuori strada in tre punti. (1) In faresti meglio a vedere c'è la preposizione, ma dopo had better non va nessun to: You'd better see a doctor, mai You'd better to see. Quindi I'd better go now, mai I had better went. (3) Non tradurre la negazione all'italiana mettendo not davanti: si dice had better not, mai hadn't better.

should / ought to o had better?

  • should e ought to: consiglio generale e pacato, spesso valido sempre (dovresti). You should eat more vegetables. People ought to exercise every week.
  • had better: questa situazione, adesso, altrimenti succede qualcosa di brutto (faresti meglio a… subito). Your temperature is very high. You'd better go to bed.
  • Se in italiano ti viene naturale aggiungere …altrimenti!, usa had better. Se è solo una buona idea in generale, usa should o ought to.
