Question tags (coletillas)
En resumen
| Frase | Coletilla |
|---|---|
| It is cold, | isn't it? |
| They were late, | weren't they? |
| You live here, | don't you? |
| She works late, | doesn't she? |
| They left, | didn't they? |
| You**'ve** met her, | haven't you? |
| We can go, | can't we? |
| We should go, | shouldn't we? |
| You aren't tired, | are you? |
| Open the door, | will you? |
Repite el auxiliar; sin auxiliar → do/does/did. I'm → aren't I?; Let's → shall we?
Es la question tag: It's a lovely day, isn't it? You live near here, don't you?
- Busca el auxiliar de la frase: is, are, was, were, has, have, can, will, should, must...
- Repítelo y añade el sujeto como pronombre: Anna → she, the party → it, your parents → they.
- Invierte la polaridad: frase afirmativa → coletilla negativa (isn't it?); frase negativa → coletilla afirmativa (is it?).
La coletilla negativa va siempre contraída: isn't she?, haven't you?, can't we? — nunca is not she?
¿Qué auxiliar? El que ya está en la frase
| La frase tiene... | Ejemplo | Coletilla |
|---|---|---|
| be (am, is, are) | The weather is terrible today, | isn't it? |
| be en pasado (was, were) | They were late again, | weren't they? |
| sin auxiliar, presente simple | You work with Tom, | don't you? |
| sin auxiliar, presente simple, he/she/it | Your sister speaks French, | doesn't she? |
| sin auxiliar, pasado simple | You met him at the wedding, | didn't you? |
| have / has (present perfect) | We've met before, | haven't we? |
| un modal (can, will, should, must...) | You can stay for dinner, | can't you? |
| otro modal | We should go now, | shouldn't we? |
| una frase negativa | You aren't busy, | are you? |
| un imperativo (orden o petición) | Pass me the salt, | will you? |
En She has finished, has es auxiliar → hasn't she? Pero en She has a car, has es el verbo principal (tener) → doesn't she?
Frase negativa, coletilla afirmativa
Si la frase ya es negativa, la coletilla es afirmativa: You don't eat meat, do you? They haven't arrived yet, have they? He wasn't at the meeting, was he? Palabras como never también hacen negativa la frase: You've never been to Spain, have you?
Peticiones: will you?
El imperativo no tiene sujeto ni auxiliar, así que el inglés usa will you? Suaviza la orden, como un ¿quieres? o un por favor en español: Close the window, will you? Don't be late, will you?
Dos detalles más
- Después de I am, la coletilla negativa es aren't I? — I'm next, aren't I?
— Let's sit down, shall we?
La entonación cambia el sentido
Pasa como con nuestro ¿no?: si la voz baja en la coletilla, estás seguro y solo buscas acuerdo: Nice day, isn't it? Si sube, de verdad no lo sabes y preguntas: You're coming tomorrow, aren't you?
You don't drink coffee, do you? — No, I don't (no lo bebo) o Yes, I do (sí lo bebo).
