In breve

Soggetto prima del verbo, niente preposizione in fondo: the town where I live. Il motivo per cui = the reason why, mai because. Dove in italiano diresti che → which/that: the museum which we visited.
B1 · Lezione 26 · where, when e why nelle frasi relative
Sai già aggiungere informazioni su un nome con who, which e that: the guide who showed us the castle, the bridge that crosses the river.
This is the castle. + The king lived in the castle. → This is the castle where the king lived. (il castello dove viveva il re). where contiene già la preposizione: vale in the castle, at the castle, there.
|---|---|---|---|
| un luogo: castle, village, square | where | in / at / on + il luogo | the village where we stayed |
| un tempo: day, year, summer, time | when | on / in / at + il tempo | the day when we climbed the tower |
| il motivo: reason | why | for that reason (per quel motivo) | the reason why the bridge is closed |
| il nome generico place | where | in / at that place | the place where my grandparents met |
Dove l'inglese si comporta diversamente
Soggetto sempre prima del verbo. In italiano puoi invertire: il villaggio dove vivevano i miei nonni. In inglese no: dopo where, when e why viene il soggetto, poi il verbo — the village where my grandparents lived, mai where lived my grandparents. La frase relativa segue subito il nome e può chiudere la frase (I love the square where they built the monument.) o stare in mezzo, prima del verbo principale (The square where they built the monument used to be a car park.).
Nessuna preposizione in fondo. Proprio perché where contiene già la preposizione, alla fine della relativa non si aggiunge nulla: the town where I live, mai the town where I live in. Lo stesso vale per when e why: the year when I was born, non the year when I was born in.
why, non because.
where o which? Prova veloce: se dentro la relativa potresti dire there (we saw the statue there), ci vuole where.
the place where, the reason why
I nomi generici place, time e reason si trovano spessissimo davanti a queste parole: a place where we can park, a time when this street was full of shops, the reason why I love this city. Quando place è il luogo dell'azione, la parola naturale è where: the place where we met. Mai the place which we met: met qui non ha oggetto, quindi which non ha niente da sostituire.
