Pensa a prendere → presi, vedere → vidi, venire → venni. In inglese go, come, take, see, get e have non prendono -ed, e il loro passato è semplicemente un'altra parola: go → went, take → took.
I went, she went, they went vale per andai, andò, andarono.
| forma base | passato | esempio |
|---|---|---|
| put | put | She put her bag on the seat. |
| cut | cut | He cut the bread. |
| cost | cost | The ticket cost ten pounds. |
| let | let | They let us in. |
| hit | hit | The bus hit a car. |
| read | read | I read the map. |
| forma base | passato | esempio |
|---|---|---|
| come | came | The bus came late. |
| drive | drove | She drove to the airport. |
| ride | rode | We rode our bikes to the beach. |
| take | took | I took a taxi. |
| get | got | We got to the hotel at six. |
| see | saw | They saw the sea. |
| give | gave | He gave me a ticket. |
| sit | sat | We sat by the window. |
| eat | ate | I ate on the train. |
| drink | drank | She drank a coffee at the station. |
| run | ran | We ran to the platform. |
| write | wrote | He wrote a postcard. |
| know | knew | The driver knew the road. |
| fly | flew | They flew to London. |
| find | found | We found a cheap hotel. |
| begin | began | The trip began in Paris. |
| forget | forgot | I forgot my passport. |
| forma base | passato | esempio |
|---|---|---|
| leave | left | The train left at nine. |
| sleep | slept | We slept on the plane. |
| feel | felt | I felt tired. |
| keep | kept | She kept the tickets. |
| meet | met | We met a guide at the port. |
| send | sent | He sent a postcard. |
| spend | spent | They spent a week in Rome. |
| lose | lost | I lost my ticket. |
| build | built | They built a new station. |
| forma base | passato | esempio |
|---|---|---|
| buy | bought | I bought two tickets. |
| think | thought | We thought the ferry was slow. |
| bring | brought | You brought too much luggage. |
| catch | caught | She caught the last bus. |
| teach | taught | The guide taught us three words. |
| forma base | passato | esempio |
|---|---|---|
| go | went | We went to Spain by plane. |
| be | was / were | The flight was long. |
Altri quattro indispensabili
Questi quattro non entrano in nessuna famiglia, ma sono tra le parole più frequenti della lingua. fare si divide in due verbi: make quando produci qualcosa (made a sandwich) e do quando svolgi un'attività (did nothing). Per pasti e bevande, dove l'italiano dice fare colazione o prendere un caffè, l'inglese usa have, e al passato had. had vale anche per un viaggio intero: We had lunch on the train. We had a great trip.
| forma base | passato | esempio |
|---|---|---|
| have | had | We had a great trip. |
| make | made | She made a sandwich for the journey. |
| say | said | He said goodbye at the station. |
| do | did | I did nothing on the beach. |
Regolari e irregolari si mescolano liberamente: We arrived at ten, took a taxi and walked to the beach. Con i mezzi di trasporto l'italiano usa in (in treno, in aereo), l'inglese usa by senza articolo: by train, by bus.
