Ya sabes describir un sustantivo con who, which y that: the guide who showed us the castle, the bridge that crosses the river. This is the castle where the king lived.
| Sustantivo delante | Palabra | Equivale a | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|---|
| un lugar: castle, village, square | where | in / at / on + el lugar | the village where we stayed |
| un momento: day, year, summer, time | when | on / in / at + el momento | the day when we climbed the tower |
| el motivo: reason | why | for that reason (por ese motivo) | the reason why the bridge is closed |
| la palabra general place | where | in / at that place (en ese lugar) | the place where my grandparents met |
La oración va justo detrás del sustantivo, igual que con who o which. Puede cerrar la frase (I love the square where they built the monument.) o ir en medio, antes del verbo principal (The square where they built the monument used to be a car park.).
En inglés no: dentro de la oración el orden es siempre sujeto + verbo. the village where my grandmother lived, nunca the village where lived my grandmother.
where ya lleva la preposición dentro, así que no se repite al final de la oración: the town where I live, nunca the town where I live in. Lo mismo pasa con when y why: the year when I was born.
En inglés, igual: the museum which we visited, pero the museum where we saw the statue. Truco: si dentro de la oración cabe there (we saw the statue there), usa where.
Con place usa where cuando el lugar es donde ocurre la acción: the place where we met, nunca the place which we met.
the place where, the reason why
Los sustantivos generales place, time y reason van con estas palabras muy a menudo: a place where we can park, a time when this street was full of shops, the reason why I love this city.
