Third conditional (periodo ipotetico nel passato)
In breve
| Frase | Forma |
|---|---|
| frase con if | if + had (not) + participio passato |
| conseguenza | would / could / might (not) have + participio passato |
| domanda | would + soggetto + have + participio passato? |
If I'd seen the ice, I wouldn't have fallen. would = sicuro, could = possibile, might = forse. Mai would dopo if; l'ausiliare è sempre have (would have fallen, non would be fallen); avrei potuto + infinito diventa could have + participio.
B1 · Lezione 17 · Il third conditional
Se avessi visto il ghiaccio, non sarei caduto = If I had seen the ice, I wouldn't have fallen.
- Passato reale: I didn't see the ice, so I fell.
- Passato immaginato: If I had seen the ice, I wouldn't have fallen.
| Parte | Forma | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| la frase con if (la condizione immaginata) | if + had + past participle | if she had looked |
| la conseguenza | would have + past participle | she would have seen the car |
| una conseguenza più cauta, meno sicura | could have / might have + past participle | she might have stopped in time |
Le forme corrispondono una a una: il congiuntivo trapassato (se avessi visto) diventa il past perfect (had seen), il condizionale passato (sarei caduto) diventa would have + participio (would have fallen). Nel parlato had e would si contraggono tutti e due in 'd: If I'd known, I'd have called you.
Tre punti in cui l'italiano ti porta fuori strada. 1. L'inglese non ha il congiuntivo: dopo if va il past perfect, mai would. Di' If I had known, non If I would have known. 2. C'è un solo ausiliare, sempre have, anche dove l'italiano usa essere: sarei caduto diventa would have fallen, mai would be fallen. 3. Il doppio imperfetto del parlato (se lo sapevo, te lo dicevo) in inglese non esiste: If I knew, I told you è sbagliato. Serve la forma completa: If I had known, I would have told you.
Affermativa, negativa e interrogativa
| Tipo | Esempio | Cosa è successo davvero |
|---|---|---|
| affermativa | If you had driven more slowly, you would have stopped in time. | You drove fast and didn't stop in time. |
| negativa | If he hadn't been so tired, he wouldn't have made that mistake. | He was tired and made the mistake. |
| interrogativa | What would you have done if the brakes had failed? | The brakes didn't fail. |
Per la negazione, metti not dopo had o dopo would: hadn't + participio, wouldn't have + participio. Per la domanda, would passa davanti al soggetto: Would you have called the police? What would you have done?
would have, could have, might have
| Conseguenza | Significato | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| would have | chi parla è sicuro della conseguenza | If I had worn a helmet, I would have been fine. |
| could have | era possibile; qualcuno ne sarebbe stato capace | If we had called sooner, the doctor could have saved him. |
| might have | forse; chi parla non è sicuro | If she had been more careful, she might have avoided the accident. |
L'inglese fa il contrario: could resta così com'è e have + participio va sul verbo principale, quindi could have saved. Non would have could, e non could saved. Lo stesso vale per might have, che corrisponde a forse avrebbe…. E dopo ogni have serve il participio: would have broken, might have missed, non would have broke e non would have break.
Come in italiano, la frase con if può stare prima (con la virgola) o dopo (senza virgola), e il significato non cambia: If I'd checked the mirror, I'd have seen him = I'd have seen him if I'd checked the mirror.
Per un presente o un futuro immaginato usa il second conditional della lezione precedente: If I had a car, I would drive (ora), invece If I had had a car, I would have driven (allora).
