B1 · Lezione 16 · Il second conditional

if + past simplewould + forma base
If I had more money,I would pay off my debts.
If she didn't spend so much, she wouldn't need a loan.

Al posto del congiuntivo imperfetto (avessi, spendesse) l'inglese usa il normale past simple: If I had, If she didn't spend. In inglese invece si usa would + forma base, uguale per tutte le persone: I would pay, she would pay. Nel parlato would si abbrevia in 'd: I'd, you'd, she'd, we'd, they'd.

Allo stesso modo, in inglese would non va mai nella frase con if: If I had more money, non If I would have more money. would sta solo nella frase principale. Attenzione anche al parlato italiano se avevo i soldi, la compravo: l'inglese non ha questa scorciatoia, e la frase principale vuole sempre would (o could, might).

Affermativa, negativa e interrogativa

Formafrase con iffrase principaleEsempio
affermativapast simplewould + forma baseIf I won the lottery, I would buy a house by the sea.
negativadidn't + forma basewouldn't + forma baseIf she earned more, she wouldn't need a loan.
interrogativapast simplewould + soggetto + forma base? What would you do if you lost your job?

If we didn't have a mortgage, we would travel more. Nelle domande would va prima del soggetto, come will: Would you invest your savings if you had the chance?

If I were you: dare consigli

Con be si usa were per tutte le persone: If I were rich, if she were here, if it were cheaper. È l'esatto equivalente di fossi / fosse. Nel parlato informale si sente anche If I was, ma were è sempre corretto. Nella formula fissa If I were you, cioè il nostro se fossi in te, è l'unica forma possibile.

Consiglio con shouldLo stesso consiglio con If I were you
You should open a savings account. If I were you, I would open a savings account.
You shouldn't lend him money. If I were you, I wouldn't lend him money.

L'inglese non ha l'in di se fossi in te: si dice If I were you, mai If I were in you. Non si dice nemmeno If I was you o If I am you.

could e might nel risultato

L'italiano copre tutti e due i casi con potrei / potremmo, mentre l'inglese li distingue. could indica che una cosa sarebbe possibile, che saremmo in grado di farla. might indica che forse succederebbe. Tutti e due vogliono la forma base senza to e non si usano mai insieme a would. would invece presenta il risultato come certo nel mondo immaginato.

wouldrisultato certoIf we saved more, we would buy a car.
couldpossibile: saremmo in grado di farloIf we saved a little every month, we could afford a new car.
mightpossibile: forse succederebbeIf prices went up again, we might move somewhere cheaper.

First o second conditional?

If I get the job, I will earn more corrisponde a se ottengo il lavoro: hai fatto domanda e può succedere davvero. If I got the job, I would earn more corrisponde a se ottenessi il lavoro: lo ritieni improbabile, o stai solo sognando.
