A2 · Lezione 1 · There was / there were

Sai già dire che cosa c'è adesso (There is a bakery on the corner. There are two schools.) e conosci il passato di be (was / were). There was / there were è il passato di there is / there are: corrisponde quasi alla lettera a c'era / c'erano.

There is a bakery on the corner. There was a bakery on the corner.una cosa (nome singolare)
There is a lot of noise. There was a lot of noise.una cosa che non si conta (nome non numerabile)
There are two schools. There were two schools.più di una cosa (nome plurale)

Il singolare tiene a / an.

Chiedere se qualcosa c'era

In italiano basta l'intonazione (C'era una biblioteca?); in inglese il verbo passa davanti a there: Was there ...? / Were there ...?

domande e risposte brevi
DomandaRisposte brevi
Was there a library near your house?Yes, there was. / No, there wasn't.
Were there any factories in your town?Yes, there were. / No, there weren't.

Per chiedere un numero o una quantità, how many o how much vanno in testa e l'ordine resta lo stesso: How many shops were there? How much traffic was there?

They were = erano: parla di persone o cose già nominate (My grandparents? They were farmers.). There were = c'erano: dice che qualcosa esisteva (There were farms all around the town.).
