Past simple e past continuous con when e while
In breve
| Ruolo | Tempo | Congiunzione |
|---|---|---|
| azione di sfondo (più lunga, già in corso), come l'imperfetto | past continuous: was/were + -ing | while |
I was watching the news when the phone rang. / While I was watching the news, the phone rang.
A2 · Lezione 5 · Past simple e past continuous insieme
Guardavo il telegiornale quando è squillato il telefono si costruisce allo stesso modo: I was watching the news when the phone rang.
| Ruolo | Tempo | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| azione di sfondo (già in corso) | past continuous | I was watching the news |
| azione che interrompe (avviene nel mezzo) | past simple | the phone rang |
When e while
|---|---|---|
| while + past continuous | l'azione di sfondo | While she was driving home, she saw the accident. |
| when + past simple | l'azione che interrompe | She was driving home when she saw the accident. |
- While the reporter was speaking, the lights went out.
- The lights went out while the reporter was speaking.
- The crowd was cheering when the president arrived.
- When the president arrived, the crowd was cheering.
Nel dubbio, però, segui lo schema: while + was/were -ing, when + past simple.
Se scrivi the phone was ringing while I watched the news, lo sfondo diventa lo squillo e la storia cambia.
La prima va al past continuous con while, la seconda al past simple con when: While the firefighters were searching the building, the roof collapsed.
