Past continuous: negativa e domande
In breve
| negativa | domanda sì/no | risposta breve | |
|---|---|---|---|
| I / he / she / it | wasn't + -ing | Was she + -ing? | Yes, she was. / No, she wasn't. |
| you / we / they | weren't + -ing | Were they + -ing? | Yes, they were. / No, they weren't. |
Domanda con parola interrogativa: What / Where / Why + was / were + soggetto + -ing?
Mai did con -ing.
A2 · Lezione 4 · Past continuous: frasi negative e domande
I was driving (stavo guidando), they were waiting (stavano aspettando).
Negativa: wasn't e weren't
In inglese not va dopo was / were, e nel parlato le due parole si fondono: was not → wasn't, were not → weren't. La forma in -ing resta dov'è, identica.
| Soggetto | Negativa | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| I / he / she / it | wasn't + -ing | She wasn't looking at the road. |
| you / we / they | weren't + -ing | The drivers weren't paying attention. |
Domande sì/no: prima was / were
In inglese l'intonazione non basta: devi spostare was o were davanti al soggetto.
| Affermazione | Domanda |
|---|---|
| He was driving fast. | Was he driving fast? |
| They were crossing the road. | Were they crossing the road? |
| You were running. | Were you running? |
Risposte brevi: si ripete solo was / were
In italiano a una domanda si risponde spesso con un semplice Sì o No. In inglese suona brusco: la risposta normale è Yes / No + pronome soggetto + was / were, e basta. Non si ripete mai la forma in -ing: a Was he driving? si risponde Yes, he was., non Yes, he was driving. Nella risposta negativa tornano wasn't e weren't.
| Domanda | Sì | No |
|---|---|---|
| Was she driving? | Yes, she was. | No, she wasn't. |
| Were they waiting? | Yes, they were. | No, they weren't. |
| Were you sleeping? | Yes, I was. | No, I wasn't. |
Guarda la terza riga: la domanda dice you, quindi la risposta dice I, e you were diventa I was.
Domande con what, where, why…: la parola interrogativa va prima
Per chiedere che cosa, dove, perché, chi o quando, metti la parola interrogativa all'inizio e poi l'ordine della domanda sì/no: parola interrogativa + was / were + soggetto + -ing. È lo schema che già usi in What are you doing?, solo al passato. Nota l'ultima riga: dove l'italiano dice Con chi stava parlando?, l'inglese apre con Who e lascia la preposizione to in fondo alla frase.
| Parola interrogativa | was / were + soggetto | forma in -ing |
|---|---|---|
| What | were you | doing when the alarm went off? |
| Where | was she | going? |
| Why | were they | shouting? |
| Who | was he | talking to? |
Due errori tipici di chi parla italiano. Primo: fare la domanda con la sola intonazione, You were running?: per una domanda vera was / were va davanti al soggetto. Secondo: usare did con la forma in -ing: Did you driving? e Did she was looking? sono impossibili.
