Soggetto Forma
I was waiting
you (tu) were waiting

A2 · Lezione 3 · Past continuous: forma affermativa

Stavo aspettando, stava piovendo, stavano nuotando diventano I was waiting, it was raining, they were swimming.

La costruzione è was/were + verbo in -ing. Al posto di stare l'inglese usa be: il was/were che conosci da I was late, they were late.

was con I, he, she, it e ogni sostantivo singolare; were con you, we, they e ogni sostantivo plurale

IwaswaitingI was waiting for the bus in the rain.
you (tu)werestandingYou were standing in the snow without a coat.
he / she / itwassnowingIt was snowing all night.
weweresittingWe were sitting on the beach.
you (voi)wereplayingYou were both playing outside.
theywereswimmingThe children were swimming in the lake.

Dove l'inglese si comporta diversamente

  • Cambia solo was / were, e in base al soggetto: was con I e con ogni terza persona singolare (the wind, my brother), were con you, we, they e ogni plurale (the clouds, the children).
Dove l'italiano dice pioveva o nevicava senza soggetto, l'inglese vuole it: it was raining, it was snowing. Lo stesso vale per le persone: niente was waiting da solo, serve I o she.

Quando usarlo

Proprio come stavo + gerundio, il past continuous descrive lo sfondo: che cosa stava succedendo in quel momento (at seven this morning, last night, all afternoon). Con when si indica il fatto che interrompe l'azione, e quello va al past simple: We were sitting outside when the storm started. Due azioni in corso possono stare una accanto all'altra, ciascuna con il suo was o were: The sun was shining and the birds were singing.

Attento all'imperfetto. Spesso l'italiano usa l'imperfetto (pioveva, aspettavo) dove l'inglese vuole il past continuous: it was raining, non it rained.
