Conosci già must. In italiano un solo verbo, dovere, copre tutto; l'inglese ha anche have to + forma base: I have to wear a uniform (Devo portare la divisa). We have to be at school at eight (perché lo dice la scuola).
have to cambia con il soggetto
must non cambia mai. have to invece è un verbo normale: con he, she, it o il nome di una persona, have diventa has.
| Soggetto | Forma affermativa | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| I / you / we / they | have to + base form | We have to wear a uniform. |
| he / she / it | has to + base form | She has to finish her homework. |
Negazioni e domande vogliono do
In italiano basta non devo o devi?; in inglese no. Siccome have to è un verbo normale, negazioni e domande si fanno con do / does, come nel present simple. La -s passa su does: dopo doesn't e Does si dice have to, mai has to. Non si dice nemmeno Have you to...? né I haven't to.
| I / you / we / they | he / she / it | |
|---|---|---|
| Negative | don't have to | doesn't have to |
| Question | Do you have to ...? | Does she have to ...? |
| Short answer | Yes, I do. / No, I don't. | Yes, she does. / No, she doesn't. |
Di' He doesn't have to come e Does he have to come?, non doesn't has to né Does he has to. Le domande con parola interrogativa funzionano allo stesso modo: What time do we have to arrive?
La trappola: «non devo» ha due traduzioni
Nell'affermativa must e have to significano quasi la stessa cosa.
| Forma | Significato | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| mustn't | It is NOT allowed. Don't do it! | You mustn't use your phone in the exam. |
| don't have to | It is not necessary. You can do it if you want, but nobody makes you. | You don't have to wear a tie. (A tie is fine, but it is not a rule.) |
Non necessario, non c'è bisogno, non sei obbligato → don't have to / doesn't have to. We don't have to go to school on Saturday vuol dire che possiamo restare a casa, non che la scuola è vietata.
Il passato: had to
must non ha passato. Per un obbligo passato (ho dovuto, dovevo: in inglese è la stessa forma) si usa had to con tutti i soggetti: I had to, she had to, they had to. Negazioni e domande vogliono did, come nel past simple, e dopo did torna la forma base have.
| Passato | Esempio | |
|---|---|---|
| Affirmative | had to | Yesterday I had to stay after school. |
| Negative | didn't have to | We didn't have to take an exam last year. |
| Question | Did ... have to ...? | Did you have to wear a uniform at your old school? |
Dopo didn't e Did di' have to, non had to: Did you have to wait?, mai Did you had to wait?
