Sai già esprimere la certezza sul futuro: It will rain. / It won't rain. Per tutto quello che sta in mezzo, dove in italiano diresti «forse», «potrebbe» o «può darsi che», l'inglese usa might e may.

might e may stanno tra will e won't

In inglese è tutto più semplice: might e may funzionano come should.

FormaSchemaEsempio
might affirmativesubject + might + base verbI might stay at home on Saturday.
might negativesubject + might not + base verbShe might not come to the party.
may affirmativesubject + may + base verbIt may rain tomorrow.
may negativesubject + may not + base verbThey may not have time on Sunday.

Il nostro «potrebbe» non si traduce con can. can dice che qualcosa è possibile in generale; per un fatto preciso che forse succederà usa might o may: It might rain tomorrow, non It can rain tomorrow. Non aggiungere to (I might go, non I might to go) e non mettere will dopo: might parla già del futuro.

Scrivi might not e may not per esteso, in due parole: le forme contratte sono rare o antiquate.

might o may?

Nel dubbio, might va sempre bene.

  • We might have a picnic if it's sunny. — un programma rilassato
  • The museum may be closed on Monday. — tono da avviso ufficiale

Fare domande sulla possibilità

Le domande con might sono rare. Per chiedere di un programma incerto usa Do you think ...? con will, e rispondi con might: Do you think it will rain? — It might. La risposta breve è solo soggetto + might o might not.

«Forse» ha due traduzioni, che vanno in posti diversi. maybe è un avverbio, una sola parola, e sta a inizio frase: Maybe we'll go camping. may è un verbo e sta dopo il soggetto: We may go camping. Non mettere maybe dove in italiano metteresti «forse», cioè dopo il soggetto: We maybe go è sbagliato.
