In breve

Struttura Dopo Significato
be used to nome / -ing essere abituato
get used to nome / -ing abituarsi
used to (senza be/get) forma base passato, oggi non più (≈ imperfetto)

Qui to è una preposizione: I'm used to driving, mai used to drive (non c'è l'infinito come dopo abituato a). Passato: was used to, got used to. La negazione va su be/get: isn't used to, can't get used to.

B1 · Lezione 33 · be used to e get used to

L'italiano fa già questa distinzione. be used to è essere abituato a: per me è già normale. get used to è abituarsi a: sta diventando normale.

  • I'm used to the cold.
  • I'm getting used to the cold.
  • I got used to the cold.

In inglese invece questo to è una preposizione, come in, at o about. Dopo una preposizione, come hai visto nella lezione 31 (interested in learning, good at cooking), vengono un nome, un pronome o la forma in -ing. Quindi dopo used to metti un nome (the food, it, the noise) o una forma in -ing (driving, speaking, eating), mai la forma base del verbo.

be used to e get used to
StrutturaCosa segueEsempio
be used to + -ingun verbo nella forma in -ingI'm used to living alone.
be used to + nounun nome o un pronomeShe's used to the spicy food.
get used toun nome o una forma in -ingYou'll get used to driving on the left.
negativenot / never su be o getHe isn't used to the noise. I can't get used to it.
pastwas/were used to, got used toWe got used to the long winters.

be o get?

Funziona come essere abituato e abituarsi: be used to indica uno stato, get used to un cambiamento. get è un verbo normale e si usa in tutti i tempi: I'm getting used to it, I got used to it, You'll get used to it, I've got used to it. Anche be si coniuga: I'm / she's / they're used to, I was used to, we weren't used to.

Negazioni e domande

Negazioni e domande si fanno come al solito, su be o su get: I'm not used to tipping, She wasn't used to the rain, I can't get used to the time difference, He never got used to the food. Are you used to the weather yet? Did you get used to the language quickly?

Non confonderlo con used to + forma base

Nell'A2 hai imparato un altro used to. I used to live in Rome corrisponde al nostro imperfetto: allora abitavo lì, oggi no. Questo used to non ha be né get davanti, vuole la forma base del verbo e parla solo del passato.

StrutturaSignificatoEsempio
used to + base formabitudine o stato del passato, oggi non più (≈ imperfetto)I used to live in a small town.
be used to + -ing / nounper me è normale (essere abituato)I'm used to living in a big city.
get used to + -ing / nounper me sta diventando normale (abituarsi)I'm getting used to living in a big city.

L'errore tipico di chi parla italiano è ricalcare abituato a + infinito. Prima di used to, cerca be o get. Se c'è uno dei due, il verbo che segue prende -ing: I'm used to work*ing at night* (è normale per me), non I'm used to work at night. Se non c'è né be né get, usa la forma base con il senso dell'imperfetto: I used to work at night (lavoravo di notte, ora non più).
