Il y avait : there was / there were
En bref
| singulier / indénombrable | pluriel | |
|---|---|---|
| + | There was a park. | There were two parks. |
| - | There wasn't a park. | There weren't any parks. |
| ? | Was there a park? | Were there any parks? |
| réponse courte | Yes, there was. / No, there wasn't. | Yes, there were. / No, there weren't. |
A2 · Leçon 1 · There was / there were (il y avait)
Remplacez is par was et are par were, sans rien changer d'autre.
|---|---|---|
| There is a bakery on the corner. | There was a bakery on the corner. | une seule chose (nom singulier) |
| There is a lot of noise. | There was a lot of noise.
| There are two schools. | There were two schools. | plusieurs choses (nom pluriel) |
Dire ce qui n'existait pas
Ajoutez not après le verbe. À l'oral, on contracte presque toujours : wasn't, weren't. Un nom singulier garde a / an.
| Forme pleine | Forme contractée | Exemple |
|---|---|---|
| there was not | there wasn't | There wasn't a supermarket in the village. |
| there were not | there weren't | There weren't any traffic lights on the main road. |
Demander si quelque chose existait
On inverse : Was there ...? / Were there ...?, comme Y avait-il ...
| Question | Réponses courtes |
|---|---|
| Was there a library near your house? | Yes, there was. / No, there wasn't. |
| Were there any factories in your town? | Yes, there were. / No, there weren't. |
Le français a un seul mot, combien, là où l'anglais en a deux : how many devant un pluriel, how much devant un indénombrable. Ils se placent en tête et l'ordre reste le même : How many shops were there? How much traffic was there?
Le piège du francophone, c'est que il y avait ne s'accorde jamais, et on a donc envie de mettre there was partout. Avant de choisir, regardez le nom : There were two schools, mais There was a park. Faites encore plus attention dans les questions, où le nom arrive tard : Were there any hills? (pluriel), mais Was there a river? (singulier).
Que le français dise il y avait ou il y a eu, dans cette leçon c'est toujours there was / there were. Et ne confondez pas they were (ils/elles étaient, pour des personnes ou des choses déjà nommées : My grandparents? They were farmers.) avec there were (il y avait : There were farms all around the town.).
