B1 · Lección 14 · ought to y had better
Ya das consejos con should (You should drink more water = «Deberías beber más agua»).
ought to: consejo general, como should
ought to + forma base equivale a should, como «deberías» o «tendrías que»: You ought to see a doctor = You should see a doctor. Igual que should, no cambia nunca: he ought to, they ought to, sin -s. Ojo con el to: «deber» va directamente con el infinitivo, pero ought no va nunca sin to en una afirmación.
La negativa es ought not to (You ought not to smoke).
You'd better take an umbrella. We'd better leave now (o perderemos el tren). Al hablar casi siempre se contrae en 'd better: I'd better, you'd better, she'd better. Ese 'd es had, no would.
La negativa pone not detrás de better: had better not + forma base. You'd better not eat that fish — huele raro.
| Forma | Estructura | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| ought to | ought to + base form | You ought to rest. |
| ought not to | ought not to + base form | You ought not to skip meals. |
| had better | had better / 'd better + base form | You'd better call the doctor. |
| had better not | had better not / 'd better not + base form | You'd better not go to work. |
| should (compare) | should + base form | You should rest more. |
¿should / ought to o had better?
- should y ought to: consejo general y tranquilo, válido en cualquier momento, como «deberías» — You should eat more vegetables. People ought to exercise every week.
— Your temperature is very high. You'd better go to bed.
- Si encaja añadir «…o si no…», usa had better. Si es solo una buena idea en general, should u ought to.
