both / either / neither

En resumen

Estructura Verbo Ejemplo
both + plural noun plural Both shops are open.
both of + the/my/them plural Both of them look nice.
either A or B concuerda con B Either cash or a card is fine.
neither A nor B concuerda con B Neither the shop nor the market sells it.
neither of + plural singular Neither of the phones works.

Verbo negativo → either: I don't want either of them. Nunca the both.

B1 · Lección 35 · both, either y neither

PalabraSignificadoEjemplo
bothuno Y el otroBoth jackets are warm.
eitheruno U el otroYou can pay at either till.
neitherNI uno NI el otroNeither shop is open.

both + sustantivo plural

Both shirts are too small. Both shops sell shoes. (no sells). Ojo con el orden: en español el artículo va delante (los dos zapatos), en inglés both va primero o no hay artículo: both shoes, both the shoes — nunca the both shoes.

both of + the / my / these / them

Si el sustantivo ya lleva the, my, these, etc., vale both o both of: both the bags o both of the bags. Con un pronombre, of es obligatorio y el pronombre va en forma de objeto: both of them, both of us (no both of they). El verbo sigue en plural: Both of these dresses look nice.

either ... or, neither ... nor

neither of + sustantivo plural + verbo SINGULAR

Aquí el español te ayuda: igual que ninguno de los dos funciona, neither of lleva verbo singular aunque el sustantivo sea plural: Neither of the shops is open on Sunday. Neither of them has a receipt. Lo mismo con either of: Is either of these coats on sale?

Qué forma del verbo usar
EstructuraVerboEjemplo
both + plural nounpluralBoth shops are closed.
both of + the/these/thempluralBoth of them were cheap.
either A or Bconcuerda con BEither the bag or the shoes are a good gift.
neither A nor Bconcuerda con BNeither the price nor the colour is right.
neither of + plural nounsingularNeither of the phones works.

Di Neither of them is cheap, no Neither of them isn't cheap. Si quieres el verbo en negativo (como no me gusta ninguno), usa either: I don't like either of them = I like neither of them.

En el habla relajada oirás Neither of them are…. En este curso escribe el verbo en singular después de neither of — is, has, works —, que siempre es correcto.
