Geçmişte olmuş bitmiş, artık değiştirilemeyecek şeyler hakkında keşke öyle olmasaydı diye konuşuruz. Türkçede bunu -saydı / -ardı ile yaparız: Buzu görseydim, düşmezdim. İngilizcede bunun karşılığı third conditional'dır (üçüncü tip koşul).
- Gerçekte olan: I didn't see the ice, so I fell.
- Hayal edilen geçmiş: If I had seen the ice, I wouldn't have fallen.
Türkçedeki gibi iki yarım da gerçek dışıdır: buzu görmedim ve düştüm. Üçüncü tip koşul her zaman olmamış bir koşulu ve bu yüzden olmamış bir sonucu anlatır.

Türkçede de bu ayrımı açıkça yapan bir kalıp var. -miş olsaydı ve -miş olurdu yapısı İngilizceye neredeyse birebir oturur: görmüş olsaydım ≈ had seen, düşmüş olurdum ≈ would have fallen. if'li tarafta, 3. derste öğrendiğin past perfect vardır (had left, had seen, had been). Sonuç tarafında would have + past participle (fiilin 3. hâli) gelir. Konuşmada had de would de 'd diye kısalır: If I'd known, I'd have called you.
if'li tarafa would koyma. If I had known doğrudur, If I would have known yanlıştır. Türkçedeki -saydı eki gibi koşulu if taşır, would yalnızca sonuçta durur.

Olumsuz yapmak için had ya da would'dan sonra not gelir: hadn't + past participle, wouldn't have + past participle. Türkçedeki görmeseydim / düşmezdim gibi taraflardan biri ya da ikisi birden olumsuz olabilir. Soru için would öznenin önüne geçer: Would you have called the police? What would you have done?
would have, could have, might have

Her have'den sonra fiilin 3. hâli (past participle) gelir: would have broken, could have helped, might have missed. Türkçede ayrı bir 3. hâl olmadığı için iki yanlış çok sık görülür. Biri 2. hâli kullanmak: would have broke, would have went yanlış. Öteki have'i atmak: I would fell yanlış.
if'li cümle başta (virgülle) ya da sonda (virgülsüz) durabilir, anlam değişmez: If I'd checked the mirror, I'd have seen him = I'd have seen him if I'd checked the mirror. Türkçede koşul hep öndedir; İngilizcede sona koymak da tamamen doğaldır.
Asıl tuzak şu: Türkçedeki Arabam olsaydı giderdim hem 'şimdi arabam olsaydı' hem de 'o zaman arabam olsaydı' demektir. İngilizcede bu ikisi ayrı kalıplardır, her seferinde zamanı seç. Şimdi ya da gelecek için ikinci tip: If I had a car, I would drive. Geçmiş için üçüncü tip: If I had had a car, I would have driven. Bir de -ardı eki geçmişteki alışkanlığı da anlatır (eskiden giderdim). Bu anlam would have değildir; would have yalnızca olmamış bir geçmiş sonuç içindir.
