Amaç bildirmenin ilk yolunu A2'de gördün: to + yalın fiil, Türkçedeki -mek için: I bought a power bank to charge my phone. Türkçede tek bir için iki durumu da karşılar: öznesi aynı olan amaç (telefonumu şarj etmek için) ve öznesi farklı olan amaç (bizi arayabilsin diye, bizi araması için). İngilizce burada ikiye ayrılır: I gave my grandmother a tablet so that she can call us. Tableti ben verdim ama arayan o. Öznesi farklı bir amaç to ile kurulamaz; so that + özne + can / will (geçmişte could / would) gerekir.
Aynı özne: to ya da in order to
Özne değişmiyorsa to + yalın fiil kullan. in order to tam olarak aynı anlamdadır; Türkçedeki "-mek amacıyla" gibi biraz daha özenli ve resmî durur, talimatlarda ve cümle başında sık görülür. Türkçede amaç genellikle cümlenin başına gelir; İngilizcede çoğunlukla sona gelir. Başa alırsan arkasına virgül koy.
- I use headphones to block out the noise on the train.
- You have to touch the sensor in order to unlock the device.
- In order to save power, I turn down the brightness. (amaç başa gelince arkasından virgül gelir)
Farklı özne: so that + modal
Türkçedeki -sın diye, -ebilsin diye, -mesi için yapılarının karşılığı so that'tir. Arkasından kendi öznesi olan tam bir cümle gelir ve fiil hemen her zaman bir modaldır: ana fiil şimdiki zamanda ya da emir kipindeyse can veya will, ana fiil geçmişteyse could veya would. Türkçede -ebilsin diye zamana göre hiç değişmez; İngilizcede modal ana fiilin zamanını izler.

Olmasın diye: olumsuz amaç
Türkçedeki -masın diye (farklı özne ya da bir şeyin olmaması) için modalı olumsuz yap: so that ... won't / wouldn't / can't / couldn't. Aynı öznede -memek için karşılığı in order not to + yalın fiildir. Türkçede olumsuzluk fiilin içindedir (-me-); İngilizcede fiile eklenmez, not ayrı bir kelime olarak to'nun önüne gelir.
- I wrote down the password so that I wouldn't forget it.
- Put a case on your phone so that the screen won't break.
- Turn off your location so that apps can't track you.
- I save my work to the cloud in order not to lose it.
için'i for ile çevirme. Türkçeden kelime kelime gidince for charge, for to charge, so that to çıkar; üçü de yanlıştır. Kendine tek soru sor: ikinci eylemi kim yapıyor? Aynı kişi → to / in order to. Başka biri ya da bir şey → so that + özne + modal: I bought a scanner to scan my photos, ama I bought a scanner so that my parents can scan their documents.
Amaç geçmişte kaldıysa modalı da geçmişe kaydır: can → could, will → would. Türkçedeki bulabilsin diye hiç değişmediği için en sık hata burada can ya da will'i olduğu gibi bırakmaktır.
so that (amaç, Türkçedeki diye) ile tek başına so (sonuç, Türkçedeki bu yüzden) aynı şey değildir. I turned the music down so that the baby could sleep ne istediğimi söyler. I turned the music down, so the baby slept ne olduğunu söyler. Amaçta modal vardır; sonuçta yoktur.
