who, which ve that ile bir ismi nitelemeyi zaten biliyorsunuz: the guide who showed us the castle, the bridge that crosses the river. Bir yer hakkında söylemek istediğiniz şey çoğu zaman o yerin ne yaptığı değil, orada ne olduğudur. İngilizce bunun için where kullanır.
Türkçede bunu ismin önüne gelen bir sıfat-fiille yaparsınız: kralın yaşadığı şato. İngilizcede sıra terstir: önce isim, sonra where ve cümlenin geri kalanı: This is the castle where the king lived. Burada where, in the castle ya da there yerine geçer. Aynı şekilde when bir zamanın (kaldığımız yaz, doğduğum yıl), why ise bir sebebin (köprünün kapalı olma nedeni) yerine geçer.

İlgi cümlesi ismin hemen arkasına gelir ve kendi içinde normal düz cümle sırasını korur: önce özne, sonra fiil. Cümlenin sonunda da (I love the square where they built the monument.) ortasında, ana fiilden önce de (The square where they built the monument used to be a car park.) durabilir.
where'den sonra edat yok
where edatı zaten içinde taşıdığı için cümlenin sonuna hiçbir şey eklenmez: the town where I live doğrudur, the town where I live in yanlıştır. when ve why için de aynısı geçerlidir: the year when I was born.
Türkçe ziyaret ettiğimiz müze ile kaldığımız köy arasında fark yapmaz, ikisi de aynı -dığı ekiyle kurulur; İngilizce ise iki farklı kelime ister. Seçmek için cümleyi Türkçe düz hâliyle kurun ve isme hangi ekin geldiğine bakın. -i hâli alıyorsa (müzeyi ziyaret ettik, kuleyi inşa ettiler) isim fiilin nesnesidir: which ya da that kullanın: the museum which we visited. -de hâli alıyorsa (müzede heykeli gördük, köyde kaldık) isim olayın geçtiği yerdir: where kullanın: the museum where we saw the statue. Kısa test: cümlenin içine there (orada) koyabiliyorsanız where doğrudur.
the place where, the reason why
place, time ve reason gibi genel isimler bu kelimelerin önünde çok sık kullanılır: a place where we can park, a time when this street was full of shops, the reason why I love this city. place olayın geçtiği yerse doğal kelime where'dir: the place where we met. the place which we met asla denmez, çünkü met burada nesne almıyor (orada buluştuk, orayı değil), which'in yerine geçeceği bir şey yok.
