El superlativo de los adjetivos

En resumen

Adjetivo Superlativo Ejemplo

consonante + y the + -iest busy → the busiest
1 vocal + 1 consonante dobla + -est big → the biggest
largo the most + adj. famous → the most famous

the es obligatorio, y nunca -est y most a la vez.

corto (una sílaba)the + -esttall → the tallest, old → the oldest
termina en consonante + ythe + -iestbusy → the busiest
largo (dos sílabas o más)the most + adjetivofamous → the most famous
irregularpalabra propiagood → the best

Las reglas de escritura

  • Adjetivo de una sílaba: -est (tall → the tallest, high → the highest). Si ya termina en -e, solo -st: large → the largest, nice → the nicest.
  • Consonante + y: la y pasa a i y se añade -est: busy → the busiest, pretty → the prettiest, easy → the easiest.
  • Una sola vocal + una sola consonante: la consonante se dobla: big → the biggest, hot → the hottest, thin → the thinnest. No se dobla tras dos vocales (cool → the coolest) ni tras dos consonantes (long → the longest).
  • Dos sílabas o más: el adjetivo no cambia y lleva the most delante: beautiful → the most beautiful, expensive → the most expensive, modern → the most modern. La prueba es la del comparativo: si era more famous, ahora es the most famous.

Los irregulares

AdjetivoComparativoSuperlativo
goodbetterthe best
badworsethe worst
farfartherthe farthest

En inglés el superlativo va entero delante del sustantivo: the tallest building, the most famous square. Y donde el español dice siempre de para el grupo (de la ciudad, del año), el inglés usa in para un lugar y of para un periodo o un conjunto: the oldest church in the city, the busiest day of the year, the best of all.

Tres trampas para hispanohablantes. Primero, no traduzcas más: con un adjetivo corto, the most tall está mal; elige -est o the most, nunca los dos (the most tallest tampoco existe). Y no olvides the: It is tallest está mal, di It is the tallest.
