A1 · Lección 37 · *How much?* y *How many?*
|---|---|---|
| contable, en plural | How many + sustantivo en plural | How many chairs are there? |
| incontable | How much + sustantivo incontable | How much rice do you want? |
El resto de la pregunta lleva el orden normal de pregunta en inglés, con do o con el verbo be delante: How many glasses do we need? How much water is there?
Preguntar el precio
El dinero es incontable, así que el precio siempre se pregunta con how much, y se pregunta con be, no con cost: How much is the soup? How much are the chips? Para señalar algo de la carta o pedir lo que hay que pagar, basta con How much is it?. Apréndelo como un bloque fijo.
- How much is the pizza? - un solo plato, así que is.
- How much are the sandwiches? - sustantivo en plural, así que are.
- How much is it?
No traduzcas ¿cuánto cuesta? palabra por palabra: How much costs the soup? está mal. Pregunta con is/are: How much is the soup? Y aunque en español digas ¿cuánto cuestan? en plural, en inglés el precio es siempre how much, nunca how many: lo que cuentas es dinero.
a lot of: vale para todo
Para decir que hay una gran cantidad, usa a lot of, que no distingue entre contables e incontables: a lot of tables, a lot of rice, a lot of people, a lot of money.
En una afirmación di a lot of: We need a lot of chairs, There is a lot of rice. Deja many y much para preguntas y negaciones.
Poca cantidad: not many, not much
Not many va con plurales, not much con incontables.
| Tipo de sustantivo | Negación | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| contable, en plural | not many | There aren't many tables free. |
| incontable | not much | There isn't much bread left. |
El not suele ir en el verbo, contraído: We don't have many forks. I haven't got much cash. There aren't many customers tonight. How much milk is there? - Not much. How many tables have they got? - Not many.
