Il superlativo degli aggettivi

In breve

Aggettivo Superlativo Esempio
corto the + -est tall → the tallest, large → the largest
consonante + y the + -iest busy → the busiest
1 vocale + 1 consonante doppia + -est big → the biggest
lungo the most + agg. famous → the most famous
irregolare parola a sé good → the best, bad → the worst, far → the farthest

Se il comparativo era taller, il superlativo è the tallest; se era more famous, è the most famous.

I cinque modi di formare il superlativo
AggettivoSchemaEsempio
breve (una sillaba)the + -esttall → the tallest, old → the oldest
finisce in consonante + ythe + -iestbusy → the busiest
lungo (due sillabe o più)the most + adjectivefamous → the most famous
irregolareuna parola a ségood → the best

Aggettivi corti: the + -est

Un aggettivo di una sillaba aggiunge -est: tall → the tallest, long → the longest, high → the highest, small → the smallest. Se finisce già in -e, aggiunge solo -st: large → the largest, nice → the nicest, safe → the safest.

Consonante + y: the + -iest

Dopo una consonante la y diventa i e si aggiunge -iest: busy → the busiest, pretty → the prettiest, noisy → the noisiest, easy → the easiest, happy → the happiest.

Niente raddoppio dopo due vocali (cool → the coolest) o due consonanti (long → the longest).

Aggettivi lunghi: the most + aggettivo

Un aggettivo di due sillabe o più non cambia e prende the most davanti, proprio come «il più»: beautiful → the most beautiful, expensive → the most expensive, popular → the most popular, interesting → the most interesting, modern → the most modern, crowded → the most crowded.

badworsethe worst
farfartherthe farthest

Come il migliore e il peggiore, the best e the worst sono parole a sé, e vogliono comunque the.

In inglese un luogo vuole in: the tallest building in the world, the oldest church in the city. Of resta per un periodo o un insieme: the busiest day of the year, the best of all. Senza gruppo, vale quello che chi ascolta ha già in mente: This café is the best.

Anche l'ordine cambia: in italiano «l'edificio più alto» mette il superlativo dopo il nome; in inglese c'è un solo the, all'inizio, e il superlativo va prima del nome: the tallest building.

Non tradurre «il più famoso» con the more famous: con the serve the most famous. Non togliere mai the (It is tallest è sbagliato: It is the tallest). Non usare the most e -est insieme: the most tallest non esiste.
