B1 · Lezione 35 · both, either e neither

ParolaSignificatoEsempio
bothl'uno E l'altroBoth jackets are warm.
eitherl'uno O l'altroYou can pay at either till.
neitherNÉ l'uno NÉ l'altroNeither shop is open.

both + nome plurale

Come entrambi: nome plurale e verbo plurale. Both shirts are too small. Both shops sell shoes (non sells). La differenza è l'articolo: l'italiano lo vuole (entrambi i negozi), l'inglese ne fa a meno: both shops.

both of + the / my / these / them

Se davanti al nome c'è già the, my, these o simili, puoi dire both oppure both of: both the bags o both of the bags. Davanti a un pronome of è obbligatorio e il pronome va in forma oggetto: both of them, both of us (non both of they), mentre l'italiano dice semplicemente loro due, noi due. Il verbo resta plurale: Both of these dresses look nice.

either ... or, neither ... nor

either A or B è «o A o B»: You can either pay by card or pay in cash. neither A nor B è «né A né B», con due differenze dall'italiano.

neither of + nome plurale + verbo SINGOLARE

Qui l'italiano ti aiuta: nessuno dei due negozi è aperto è al singolare, e così l'inglese. neither of è seguito da un nome o pronome plurale (neither of the shops, neither of them), ma il verbo è singolare: Neither of the shops is open on Sunday. Neither of them has a receipt. Vale anche per either of («uno dei due»): Is either of these coats on sale?

Quale forma del verbo
StrutturaVerboEsempio
both + nome pluralepluraleBoth shops are closed.
both of + the/these/thempluraleBoth of them were cheap.
either A or Bconcorda con BEither the bag or the shoes are a good gift.
neither A nor Bconcorda con BNeither the price nor the colour is right.
neither of + nome pluralesingolareNeither of the phones works.

neither è già negativo. L'italiano raddoppia la negazione (Non mi piace nessuno dei due, Non è né caro né bello); l'inglese no. Non aggiungere not o don't: Neither of them is cheap, non Neither of them isn't cheap. Se il verbo è già negativo, usa either: I don't like either of them = I like neither of them. Mai don't + neither.

Nel parlato informale sentirai Neither of them are…. In questo corso scrivi il verbo singolare dopo neither of (is, has, works), che è sempre corretto.
