less e fewer

In breve

nome quantità minore + confronto
non numerabile (money, time) less money less money than last year
numerabile plurale (people, bags) fewer people fewer people than before

little → less, few → fewer. «Meno… di/che» = sempre than. Puoi mettere un numero davanti al nome? → fewer. Denaro/tempo/peso: less than five pounds, less than an hour.

B1 · Lezione 51 · less time, fewer people: due parole per «meno»

È la stessa divisione di how much e how many, che conosci già.

L'ordine è: less/fewer, poi il nome, poi than.

  • This fridge uses less electricity than the old one.
  • I bought fewer clothes than last year.
  • She earns less than her brother.
  • The small shop has fewer customers than the supermarket.

Do you need more bags?' 'No, fewer.' Somme di denaro, tempo e peso invece contano come una quantità unica e vogliono less: less than five pounds, less than an hour.

Se sì, fewer; se no (three moneys? no), less.

Nell'inglese parlato molti dicono less people o less cars.
