both / either / neither

Türkçede bunların hepsinin karşılığı var: both = ikisi de, either = ikisinden biri (hangisi olduğu fark etmez), neither = ikisi de değil / hiçbiri. Anlamda sorun yok. Hatalar başka üç yerden gelir: kelimelerin yeri, fiilin tekil mi çoğul mu olacağı ve olumsuzluğun nereye konacağı.

both + çoğul isim + çoğul fiil

Türkçede ikisi de ismin arkasına gelir (mağazaların ikisi de). İngilizcede both ismin önüne geçer: Both shops sell shoes. Türkçede Mağazaların ikisi de kapalı dersiniz ve fiil çoğul eki almaz. İngilizcede ise isim de fiil de çoğul olur: Both shirts are too small (is değil), Both shops sell shoes (sells değil).

both of + the / my / these / them

İsmin önünde the, my, these gibi bir kelime varsa both de olur, both of da olur: both the bags = both of the bags. Zamirden önce of zorunludur ve zamir nesne hâlini alır: both of them, both of us (both of they değil). Fiil yine çoğuldur: Both of these dresses look nice.

either ... or, neither ... nor

Bunlar Türkçedeki ya ... ya da ve ne ... ne de kalıplarıdır: You can either pay by card or pay in cash. (Ya kartla ya da nakit ödeyebilirsiniz.) Neither the blue one nor the red one fits. (Ne mavisi ne de kırmızısı oluyor.) İki isim bağlandığında fiil, kendisine en yakın isme uyar. İki tekil isimde fiil tekildir: Neither the shop nor the market sells it.

neither of + çoğul isim + TEKİL fiil

neither of kalıbından sonra çoğul bir isim ya da zamir gelir (neither of the shops, neither of them). Yine de dikkatli İngilizcede fiil tekil olur, çünkü ikisinden her biri tek tek ele alınır: Neither of the shops is open on Sunday. Neither of them has a receipt. either of için de aynısı geçerlidir: Is either of these coats on sale?

Türkçe kafayla yapılan en sık hata. Türkçede Hiçbiri açık değil ya da İkisi de açık değil dersiniz: olumsuzluk fiilin üstündedir. İngilizcede neither zaten olumsuzdur, bu yüzden fiile not ya da don't eklemeyin. Doğrusu Neither of them is cheap, yanlışı Neither of them isn't cheap. İkisi de ... değil cümlesini both ... not diye de kurmayın, çünkü Both shops aren't open İngilizcede belirsizdir. Doğrusu: Neither shop is open. Fiil illa olumsuz olacaksa either kullanın: I don't like either of them = I like neither of them. (ne ... ne de kalıbında Türkçede de fiil olumlu kalır, yani neither ... nor size tanıdık gelecektir.)

Türkçede çoğul bir nesne öznesiyle fiil çoğul eki almaz (Mağazalar kapalı). İngilizcede fiil her zaman özneye uyar. Kural şu: both ile fiil çoğul, neither of ile tekil olur. Rahat konuşmada Neither of them are… da duyarsınız, ama bu kursta neither of kalıbından sonra tekil fiil yazın (is, has, works). Tekil fiil her zaman doğrudur.
