Order within the clitic cluster

In short

Dao sam mu ga but Dao mu ga je. se + je → je drops (Vratila se). nisam/nije are stressed: Nije mi ga dao. Clitics follow da, kad, jer, koji directly; i and a do not count.

The full explanation, from the lesson that teaches this rule

You already know that the short unstressed words — sam, mi, ga, se and their relatives — gather in second position, right after the first stressed word of the clause. As soon as you tell a real story, though, several of them land there at once: Dao sam mu ga, Ja ću ti se javiti, Pokazala nam ih je. Serbian lines them up in one fixed order, and a native speaker hears a wrong order immediately.

The template

Learn this as one chain, the way you learn a phone number. Every slot is optional, but the ones that are filled always come in this order:

The clitic cluster, always read left to right
123456
liauxiliary (except je)dative pronounaccusative pronounseje
lisam, si, smo, ste, su · ću, ćeš, će, ćemo, ćete · bih, bi, bismo, bistemi, ti, mu, joj, nam, vam, imme, te, ga, je, nas, vas, ihseje
  • Da li si mu ga dao? — li, then the auxiliary si, then mu (to him), then ga (it).
  • Juče sam mu ga dao. — auxiliary first, then dative, then accusative.
  • Ja ću ti se javiti sutra. — the future auxiliary ću, then ti, then se.
  • Sviđa li ti se novi stan? — li, then ti, then se.

Dative before accusative, always: mi ga, ti ih, joj ga, nam ih — never ga mi. Think "to whom, then what".

The odd one out: je goes LAST

Every auxiliary stands right at the front of the cluster — except je (the past-tense auxiliary for he, she, it). je jumps to the very end, after the pronouns. Compare the three persons:

SubjectOrderExample
I (sam)auxiliary – dative – accusativeDao sam mu ga.
they (su)auxiliary – dative – accusativeDali su mu ga.
he / she (je)dative – accusative – jeDao mu ga je.

So Marko mu ga je dao juče and Dao mu ga je juče, never je mu ga. The same with a single pronoun: Rekla mi je, Video ga je.

When se and the auxiliary je would meet, Serbian simply drops je: Ona se vratila (she came back), Film mi se svideo (I liked the film). Write se and stop there.

Two je side by side would be confusing, so when the pronoun je (her, it — feminine) meets the auxiliary je, the pronoun becomes ju: Dao mu ju je (he gave her/it to him).

Negation

The negative auxiliaries nisam, nisi, nije, nismo, niste, nisu are full stressed words, not clitics. That means they can open the sentence, and the pronoun clitics simply follow them in their usual order: Nisam mu ga dao (I didn't give it to him), Nije mi rekla (she didn't tell me). Because nije is not the clitic je, there is no jump to the end.

If something else already stands first, the clitics sit in second position and the negative word comes after them: Zašto mi nisi rekla? (Why didn't you tell me?).

With an ordinary verb, ne glues onto the verb, and the clitics follow the pair: Ne vidim ga, Ne sećam se, Ne mogu da ti ga dam.

What counts as first after a conjunction

Subordinating conjunctions and relative words — da, kad, jer, ako, dok, pošto, koji — do count as the first word of their clause. The whole cluster comes immediately after them:

  • Rekla je da mi ga je već poslala.
  • Zakasnio sam jer mi se pokvario auto.
  • Kad smo mu dali poklon, odmah ga je otvorio.

The little linking words i and a do NOT count. Skip over them and put the clitics after the next stressed word: A ja mu nisam oprostila, I onda smo se vratili kući — never A mu… or I smo se….

pa and ali are looser: in everyday Serbian the cluster often follows them directly — Pokvario mi se auto, pa sam zakasnio; Nije bila kod kuće, pa sam joj ga ostavila ispred vrata. Putting a stressed word in between (ali ja sam…) is never wrong.

The commonest learner errors: putting je in front of the pronouns (je mu ga), putting the accusative first (ga mi), and hanging clitics on i or a. Say the chain li – aux – dative – accusative – se – je until it sounds automatic.
