Accusative of animate masculine nouns

Last lesson you learned that a masculine noun used as a direct object looks exactly like it does in the dictionary: Vidim sto. — I see a table. That is true, but only for half of the masculine nouns. Serbian splits masculine nouns into two groups, and the split is about life.

If the noun names something alive — a person or an animal — the direct object form is different: it adds -a.

So one and the same verb takes two different shapes after it, depending on what the object is:

• Vidim psa. — I see a dog. (a dog is alive → -a)
• Vidim sto. — I see a table. (a table is not alive → no ending)

What counts as alive

Serbian counts people and animals as alive. Every animal does, from a bear to a spider, so every masculine animal name takes the -a:

Everything else is not alive: plants, cars, buildings, food, toys. A tree is alive in biology but not in Serbian grammar. These nouns never change:

A car does not count, even though people talk about cars as if they were alive: Imam auto. keeps its dictionary form. Only people and animals take the -a.

The disappearing a

A few short masculine nouns have an -a- in their last syllable that drops out as soon as an ending is added. You already saw this in the plural.

mačak is a male cat. A female cat is mačka, which is feminine and follows the rule you already know: Vidim mačku.

Only masculine, only singular

This split exists only in the masculine singular. Feminine and neuter nouns behave exactly as in the last lesson, alive or not: Vidim ribu. — I see a fish. Vidim jaje. — I see an egg.

The -a form is not new to the language — it is also the form used after words like bez (without), which you will meet later as the genitive. For now, learn it as the shape an animate masculine object takes.
